About

Roots

I’m Marc — a Swiss full-stack web developer and technical lead working where engineering, design, and storytelling meet.

I’m currently working as a Senior Web Developer at The New Humanitarian, where I lead the technical architecture and IT infrastructure for the organisation’s digital ecosystem — from platform infrastructure and security to a Drupal CMS hosting 100,000+ articles and a custom SvelteKit framework powering award-winning investigations.

I operate as both technical lead and product thinker, translating editorial needs into scalable, reliable systems. I thrive in high-autonomy environments where engineering directly impacts people’s lives.

Background

I hold a BSc. in Media Engineering from the FHGR in Switzerland and started my career behind a camera before moving fully into web development and interactive storytelling.

In 2015, I joined Tages-Anzeiger as the first developer in their newly formed “Interaktiv” team, where I helped build award-winning data journalism (European Newspaper Award, Swiss Press Award).

In 2017, I moved to Cape Town, freelanced for media and NGO clients, and eventually joined The New Humanitarian in 2019, where I’ve been ever since.

Since 2015, I’ve also been teaching web development and interaction design at FHGR (University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons) in Switzerland, working remotely from Cape Town.

Today

I now divide my life between Switzerland and South Africa. Both landscapes shape how I think about design, pace, and the kind of digital experiences I want to build: calm, clear, and human-focused.

I spend my time turning complex reporting into engaging interactive stories — the kind of pieces that help people understand the world a little better.

Outside the screen, I recharge in nature: trail running, climbing, surfing, or simply breathing mountain air. That connection to the outdoors influences how I work — I prefer interfaces that feel calm, focused, and respectful of a reader’s attention and bandwidth.
